Verses, Chants and Poems

“All Buddhist Centers have Rituals, Services and ceremonies. At most all such functions we chant verses, poems or sutras and Dedications of Merit. Each Center has a collection of these writings, often called a Sutra Book, used in daily practice.” -“Living by Vow” / Shohaku Okumura

Hannya Shingyo 般若心経

The Heart Sutra:

Perhaps our most beloved and frequently recited chant is the Heart Sutra. It is also the shortest of Several of the Prajna Paramita Sutras. Below is a video recitation of the Heart Sutra in Japanese. Well worth the five minutes to listen and feel the rhythm and intensity of the heart beat. Zen Buddhism suggests this is a concise portrayal of the true essence of Reality. You can read the text of the English version as well as a phonetic copy of the Japanese in our Sutra Book which follows after the video.

A phonetic copy of the Japanese as well as the English version are found in our Sutra Book.
